Use video files for signage
Before you upload a video file to SMART Control as signage content, a few preparation steps will help ensure it plays correctly on your SMART Board displays.
Notes
Each file you upload must be 200 MB or less. Supported formats are MP4, WebM, and MOV.
When your file is ready, upload it to your content library.
Best practices
Keep videos short
Signage viewers typically glance at a screen for only a few seconds. Aim for videos of 5–15 seconds where possible. If your video is shorter than the content block duration you assign it to in SMART Control, the video loops automatically to fill the block.
Design for silent playback
Most displays in signage contexts are muted. Don't rely on audio to convey your message. Use text overlays, captions, and clear visuals instead.
Export at the correct resolution and orientation
Export your video to match your display's orientation:
Landscape displays: 1920×1080 (16:9)
Portrait displays: 1080×1920 (9:16)
Exporting at the wrong orientation results in black bars on screen.
Use MP4 with H.264 encoding
MP4 with H.264 encoding offers the best compatibility across hardware. Keep bitrates around 8,000 kbps and aim for a file size under 25 MB where possible to ensure smooth playback on standard hardware.
Focus on one message
Feature a single idea, promotion, or call to action per video. Use large text and bold imagery that's readable at a glance.
