Troubleshooting using the status lights

If the interactive whiteboard has an active pen tray (models SBM680, SBM680E, SBM685 and SBM685E), you can use the status lights to help you identify and resolve issues with the interactive whiteboard.

Solutions

None of the tool status lights (pointer, pen colors, and eraser status light) are lit.

SMART Settings indicates that, “No SMART Boards are connected” and an X appears next to the SMART Board icon.

  • Make sure the USB cable is securely connected to the interactive whiteboard and the computer.

  • Connect the USB cable to a different USB receptacle on the computer.

  • Make sure the green power light on the interactive whiteboard controller (the DSP) is lit. The controller is at the bottom-center at the back of the interactive whiteboard. If it is not lit, refer to The controller power light is not lit.
  • Install the latest version of SMART Product Drivers on the connected computer.

  • Install the latest firmware.

  • Make sure the flat cable that connects the pen tray to the DSP is securely connected.

  • If the interactive whiteboard has a pen tray that doesn’t include integrated projector controls (that is, power, source and volume controls on the left section), make sure the USB cable is securely connected between the computer and the interactive whiteboard’s DSP controller module. (at the bottom-center on the interactive whiteboard’s rear surface).

  • If the interactive whiteboard has a pen tray that includes integrated projector controls (that is, power, source and volume controls on the left section):

    • Make sure the projector Is on and displaying an image.

    • Make sure the cable between the projector and the pen tray is securely connected at both ends.

    • Make sure the cable between the projector and the DSP is securely fastened. The interactive whiteboard receives power from the projector in this circumstance.

    • Make sure the USB cable is securely connected between the computer and the Computer 1 or Computer 2 receptacles on the back of the pen tray.

    • Make sure the pen tray’s short USB cable is connected securely to the interactive whiteboard’s DSP controller module (at the bottom-center on the interactive whiteboard’s rear surface).

    • Make sure the projector’s USB port mapping setting is set to turn on the correct USB port on the pen tray for the selected video source.

The controller power light is not lit.

  • Make sure the power cable is securely connected to the interactive whiteboard and the power outlet.

  • Confirm the power outlet is working by connecting another device.

  • Confirm the SATA cable is securely connected to the DSP (this cable connects the pen tray and DSP).

The status light is flashing white.

The interactive whiteboard is working only in HID mode (mouse mode): Touch works when you use a pen or your finger, but writing and drawing don’t work without selecting a pen tool manually.

  • SMART Product Drivers is not running. Restart the computer to restart SMART Product Drivers.

  • SMART Product Drivers is not installed, is installed incorrectly or the installed version is incompatible with the interactive whiteboard. Install the latest version of SMART Product Drivers

The interactive whiteboard controller power light is flashing amber or solid amber.

The interactive whiteboard doesn’t respond to touch.

  • A firmware update it taking place. Allow the firmware update to finish.

  • Reset the interactive whiteboard by disconnecting and then reconnecting the power cable.

For models with a pen tray, all the tool status lights (pointer, pen colors, and eraser status light) are lit.

The interactive whiteboard doesn’t respond to touch.

  • The interactive whiteboard DSP controller’s application firmware may not be operating. This can happen if a firmware update is interrupted before it has finished.

  • Try again to update the firmware. To do this, use the SMART Firmware Updater application. See Firmware update doesn’t complete on your SMART Board M600 series interactive whiteboard.

  • If the interactive whiteboard does not respond to touch after reapplying the DSP controller’s firmware, recalibrate the optical touch system by using the SBM600 touch system calibration software (requires calibration puck hardware, part number 1029480). See Downloading, installing, and running FRU software.

    Note

If the calibration puck is not available, you may be able to use any similar circular object with a similar diameter (94 mm), as long as it is not transparent or highly reflective, and will not scratch the interactive whiteboard’s surface. A table-hockey puck, or a foam-bottom coffee mug are examples of alternative tools.

You’re experiencing other issues with the indicator lights or the previous solutions don’t resolve the issue.

  • Refer to the SMART knowledge base for more information about using the indicator lights in troubleshooting.
