SMART Notebook software versions 21.0 and earlier use a technology called TLS 1.0 and 1.1 to protect your data when it’s sent over the internet. However, these older technologies now have some weaknesses that make them susceptible to attacks by malicious agents. To keep your data safe while using SMART software, SMART Notebook is phasing out the use of TLS 1.0 and 1.1 and implementing new protections.

To avoid disruptions and stay up-to-date with the best security practices, SMART recommends updating to the latest version SMART Notebook by July 2024. If you don't update by then, you’ll see an error message that says “Trial period has expired” even if you have an active SMART Notebook Plus (SMART Learning Suite) subscription.

Using the Spotlight tool

To start the Spotlight tool

Tap in the notification area (Windows operating systems) or Mac menu bar (macOS operating system software), and then select Spotlight.
Note
If your computer isn’t currently connected to a SMART interactive product, the SMART Board icon includes an X in its lower-right corner.
If your computer is connected to more than one display, select the display on which you want the spotlight to appear.
Optionally, press the spotlight’s edge, and then drag outward or inward to make the spotlight larger or smaller.

Note

When the Spotlight tool is open, you can write on and interact with screen elements in the spotlight area only.

To close the Spotlight tool

Tap in the spotlight’s upper-right corner.
