Note
SMART Notebook is a component of the SMART Learning Suite software bundle. Install SMART Learning Suite to begin using SMART Notebook.
SMART has recently redesigned its licensing model to focus on subscriptions and users rather than product keys and activated computers. This simplified subscription model is available for SMART Notebook 17 and later (18 recommended) through SMART’s new software portal.
If you’re a system administrator, you no longer need a product key to activate Notebook software on each user’s computer, provided you install or upgrade users to SMART Notebook 17 or later (18 recommended) and add each user’s SMART account email address to your school’s subscription in the new portal. After you add users to your school’s subscription, they can sign in to their accounts to use SMART Notebook software on any computer or device where it is installed—the SMART Notebook activation is no longer linked to a specific computer.
If a user has not been added to the new software portal or is using an earlier version of SMART Notebook, the system administrator enters a product key to activate Notebook software on the user’s computer.
To set users up in the new portal
If you are a system administrator, sign in to the new portal and add each teacher’s email address to your school’s subscription.
To find a product key
Check the sales confirmation email or the SMART software portal (where product keys are recorded). If you are the contact provided on the order (usually a purchaser or a technical contact), you received the confirmation email at the time of purchase, as well as an email that contained sign in information for the software portal.
If your organization purchased the subscription to SMART Learning Suite, contact your procurement department or your organization’s technical support team to track down the product key.
Access to support services requires an active subscription to SMART Learning Suite. You are entitled to upgrades and live technical support for as long as the subscription is active.
Note
Anyone can download SMART Notebook for free, and all its features are enabled during the trial period. After the trial period ends, Notebook opens in limited mode: premium features are no longer accessible, and a watermark appears on the screen if they are not using a SMART Board interactive display.
SMART Notebook’s premium features remain available if you sign in and have an active subscription.
To check the status of your subscription
If you are a system administrator, sign in to the SMART software portal using the sign in information SMART emailed to you.
If you are a teacher, contact your system administrator, who manages your school’s subscriptions and has access to the SMART software portal.
When you prepare a system image for your computers, there are two recommended methods for activating SMART Notebook software.
Use the delayed activation feature.
Silently activate the software after deploying a system image.
Delayed activation is a new feature in SMART Notebook software that allows you to register a product key without immediately activating the software. The software is activated when a user opens SMART Notebook software and clicks Activate. Since the product key is already registered, no further input is required from the user.
Delayed activation is useful for uniform deployments that include users of SMART Notebook software and users that don't use SMART Notebook software. Only users who start SMART Notebook software activate registered keys and consume a license.
You can execute a command to activate your software after you install SMART Notebook software. You can also execute a command to activate your software after you deploy a system image which includes SMART Notebook software. Once you execute the command on the client computers, SMART Notebook software silently activates. No user interaction is required.
