Adding Lumio lessons to Canvas for synchronous and asynchronous teaching
Add a lesson to one of your Canvas courses either for synchronous or asynchronous teaching. Lumio lessons can be added either to the main navigation of the course or as an assignment for students to work on. The added Lumio lesson keeps your class within Canvas so you can continue to track student work and progress using Canvas.
Use Canvas’s redirect tool to create a link students can use to open join your live Lumio lesson without leaving Canvas. Once students open the link from the Canvas course’s navigation, they’ll be able to join your live Lumio lesson.
To add a Lumio lesson using the redirect tool
Open the Canvas course.
From the course’s navigation, click Settings.
Open the Apps tab.
In the search bar, type redirect.
Click the Redirect Tool app and then click Add App.
In the Name field, type a descriptive name that will help your students identify what it is, for example, Lumio. Then enter https://hellosmart.com in the URL field.
Clear the Force Open in New Tab check box and then select the Show in course navigation option.
Click Add App to finish creating the link.
Students will see the link as a menu item in their course navigation. When they select the link, they’re directed to the Lumio sign in page, where they can join your live lesson either as a guest or by signing in to their SMART Account (using their school-provided email and password).
Create an assignment in Canvas using a shared link to your Lumio lesson so that students can work on it asynchronously.
To add a Lumio lesson as an assignment in Canvas
Sign in to Lumio.
Find the lesson you want and create a student access link for it.
Copy the student access link.
Open the Canvas course.
Click + for the module you want to add the assignment to.
From the Add drop-down, select External URL.
Paste the student share link you copied from Lumio and add a name for the lesson.
Keep the Load in a new tab check box cleared and click Add Item.
Publish the module for your students.
Now when your students click the assignment, it opens in Canvas. Students will be prompted to sign in using their SMART Account (their school-provided email and password). After they've signed in, they can complete the lesson asynchronously.
