SMART tools and utilities

Use SMART tools in classroom challenges to increase student engagement. You can open these tools by selecting from the global navigation bar.

Select an engagement tool to open it on the display.

The clock, dice, spinner, stopwatch, and timer open as widgets that display on top of your other content. When the tool is open, you can customize settings such as type, color, sounds, and more. Your settings persist whenever you’re signed in to your SMART Account, even when using another device. If you’re not signed in to a SMART Account, the engagement tools’ settings reset to their defaults.

You can resize a widget dynamically. Press and drag the icon in the corner of the widget to resize it.

When the widget for a tool is open, you can continue to use the display’s touch screen to interact with background elements, like a web page or the input you’re connected to.

Customize the clock widget

Tap to open the settings, where you can choose a clock type (both digital and analog, or analog only), set alarms, and customize other features.

Tap to change the type and number of dice.

Tap to re-roll the same dice.

Use multiple dice with numbers to make a math game. Students can add or subtract the number shown on one die with the numbers shown on the other die.

Tap to open the settings, where you can customize the look of the dice, set plots of result distributions, and switch between numbers and pips.

Tap to open the spinner widget.

Customize the spinner by adding words, new sections, or changing the colors.

Tap the middle of the spinner to spin it.

Tap to change the spinner to a cube.

Tap to access preset quick selection spinners, including continents and numbers.

Tap to edit the quick selections. You can add custom lists of names, images, and shapes.

Tap to open the settings, where you can customize the look of the spinner, tally results, and display spin results as a sequence list.

Import a list for the spinner widget

You can upload a .csv file with list items as a quick way to customize the spinner widget. Before you upload the list, make sure the .csv file contains data in only two columns and meets the following requirements:

  • The first column is for the title of the spinner and should only contain one value.

  • The second column is where you list the items that should appear in the spinner.

For example, this .csv file would create a spinner called Topics with 4 items: History, Language Arts, Maths, and Biology.

To upload the list, tap or and select Lists. Click Upload to open the Files Library where you can navigate to and select your .csv file.

Use the stopwatch to help students know when to rotate among stations, or have them race the clock to complete an activity.

Customize the stopwatch widget

Tap to open the settings, where you can change the type of stopwatch (analog, digital, or both), customize the look of the stopwatch, turn on laps, and display the time to the centisecond.

Use the timer to help students know when to rotate among stations, or have them race the clock to complete an activity.

Set the timer

Before you can use the timer, you must choose a timer duration.

  1. Tap to open the settings.

  2. Tap Set timer.

  3. Select one of the preset duration buttons. If you want to create a custom duration, press and hold a duration button and enter the duration.

  4. Tap X to close the Set timer screen. The timer uses the duration you selected

Customize the timer widget

You can also use the settings to customize the appearance and behavior of the timer.

  • Use Type, Color, and Alert sounds to customize the look and sound of the timer.

  • Use End messages to write a message to display when the timer runs out.

Available in iQ 4.7.2 only.

SMART Lasso is an AI tool that lets you circle anything on the screen and search or explore further with Google Gemini, including content from a connected computer. The AI models used for selection on the board are all local, and content is only uploaded to the network when you opt to share it to a network-enabled service like Google or Gemini.

Note 

If SMART Lasso doesn’t appear in SMART tools & utilities, enable it by going to SettingsSMARTSMART AI ToolsLasso.

To use SMART Lasso

  1. Tap.

  2. Use your finger or pen to draw a circle around the content on the screen you want to search for or learn more about.

  3. A selection box appears. Drag the corners to resize it or drag the box to move it.

  4. Tap either:

    Google Search: Opens a Google search for the selected content in split screen. Visual matches appear alongside your Google results.

    OR

    Send image to Gemini: Opens Google Gemini in split screen with the selected content. Ask Gemini questions or explore the topic further.

  5. Tap the back arrow or X in the search window to clear the selection, draw a new one, or close the tool.

Tap to connect the SMART Document Camera, if available, to the display.

Tapfreeze frame to freeze the current frame.

Once froze, you can ink over the screen and mark up your content.

Tap to record your screen as you present content.

SeeRecord the screen

Tap to take a screen capture of your screen. Screen captures are saved in the Files Library as PNG files.

To access screenshots, tap Files LibraryImagesScreenshots.

Use the screen shade tool to hide content on the display, revealing it only when you choose to.

Tap to turn on screen shade, which adds a gray screen shade to the screen. The screen shade icon will disappear after a few seconds. To restore it and close screen shade, tap anywhere on the screen, then tap Close.

Tap to open the Sensors app. This app shows values from the display’s environmental sensors: estimated CO2, particulate matter, volatile organic compounds, humidity, and temperature. Available on SMART Board RX and QX (V2) Pro displays only.

Tap to connect the SMART Electric Stand, if available, to the display. You can use it to adjust the height of the stand directly from the display.
