Summary:

SMART Notebook introduces expanded language support, new usability enhancements like swipe navigation, and several workflow improvements—including restored table options, better PowerPoint importing, and bulk Flipchart conversion. Windows users benefit from an improved ARM installation experience and multiple fixes for inking, scrolling, text spacing, gestures, and startup behavior. This release also includes targeted macOS 26 (Tahoe) fixes and updates.

    • Highlights

      • Expanded language support: Added support for Croatian (Croatia).

      • Usability improvements: You can now use swipe gestures to easily move between pages.

      • Improved table options: The “Adjust size” option for tables has been restored in SMART Notebook. This feature, previously available in earlier versions, is now back to help you quickly resize tables with a single command.

      • Importing Microsoft PowerPoint improvements: Added an option to import Microsoft PowerPoint files as images when importing them as editable objects fails.

      • Bulk Flipchart file conversion: Use the new bulk file converter to simultaneously convert multiple Flipchart files to SMART Notebook files.

      • Windows for ARM installations: Improved the installation experience on Windows for ARM devices. Although SMART Notebook isn’t officially supported on this platform, the installer now excludes incompatible components to prevent related setup errors. SMART Notebook then runs using Microsoft’s built-in emulation features.

    • Resolved issues

      • Resolved an issue where starting SMART Notebook on Windows could open a Chromium browser window instead of SMART Notebook.

      • Resolved an issue where navigating to the next page in a SMART Notebook file retained the previous page’s scroll position, ensuring each page now opens at the top by default.

      • Resolved an issue where the eraser on pens for certain SMART display models (including the 6000, 7000, and 8000 series) did not erase content in SMART Notebook files.

      • Resolved an issue where text spacing in SMART Notebook 25 appeared differently when opening pages created in earlier Notebook versions, ensuring tabbed and spaced text now maintains consistent positioning across versions.

      • Resolved an issue where an error message could appear when adding a link to a cloned page.

      • Resolved an issue on SMART Board 4000 series interactive displays and some third-party interactive displays where using the display’s pen or the Pens tool in SMART Notebook Plus could cause unexpected behavior, including ink color changes, shapes switching to inking while being drawn, or digital ink appearing as a selected object while writing.

      • Installing drivers for SMART Document Cameras 450, 330, and 280 causes an issue with current Windows security settings. To address this, these drivers are no longer installed by default and must be selected during installation so that only those who have these document cameras need to install the drivers that support them in Notebook.

      • The Magnifier app does not automatically request Screen Recording Permission. The feature works properly after granting the permission manually in the operating system.

      • Resolved the following issues on macOS 26 (Tahoe):

        • When the Page Sorter tab's Auto-hide option is enabled, you may not be able to interact with the tab while viewing Notebook files on a SMART Board interactive display. As a workaround, go to ViewSide Bar Options and clear the Auto-hide check box.

        • Dragging objects outside of the canvas, or between pages in Dual Page view, may not work as expected. As a workaround, select an object and use Cut/Copy/Paste to place an object.

        • The ViewSide Bar Options, ViewToolbar Options, and ViewExtend Page submenus may appear disabled. As a workaround, closing and restarting SMART Notebook may resolve the issue.

        • Scrolling or panning through pages in Dual Page view is not functional. As a workaround, use single page view to scroll through tall pages when needed.

    • Known issues

  • Bing image search replaced with Pixabay in SMART Notebook: Due to Microsoft’s retirement of the Bing Search APIs, SMART Notebook (and Lumio) has transitioned its image search feature to use Pixabay. Users can continue to search for and insert royalty-free images directly within Notebook, now powered by Pixabay’s image library.

  • Multi-touch support: Improved multi-touch gesture support for game-based activities, such as Super Sort or Shout It Out!, where multiple people may move objects in the activity at the same time.

Resolved issues

  • Previously, if multiple students attempted to drag and drop the same object at the same time during a game-based activity, the touch interaction may not have registered. This issue has been resolved. Simultaneous touch inputs are now handled more reliably in collaborative scenarios.

  • In some cases, connecting a laptop to the display caused digital ink to appear offset from the pen. This has now been fixed.

Windows

  • In some cases, quickly reopening SMART Notebook after closing it caused a browser window (such as Chrome) to briefly launch and close, followed by the SMART Technologies Error reporter appearing. This issue has been resolved. Notebook now starts reliably—even when reopened shortly after being closed—and no longer triggers unintended browser behavior or error messages.

  • Previously, selecting two shapes and using the Divide Shape option caused SMART Notebook to become unresponsive. This issue has been fixed. Notebook now correctly divides both shapes into equal sections and continues functioning as expected.

  • Previously, when inserting a measurement tool (such as a ruler or protractor) after extending a page in Notebook, the tool would appear at the top of the page rather than in the visible area. This issue has been fixed and measurement tools now insert correctly in the middle of the visible page.

  • In some cases, add-ons appeared to be missing in the Add-ons tab. This issue has been fixed.

(This appears to be an Apple issue, and SMART is working with Apple to resolve it.)   • Fixed the following issues previously experienced when working in Dual Page mode:

    • Occasionally Notebook would close unexpectedly after users repeatedly moved pages within the Page Sorter and switched to and from Dual Page mode.

    • The page sorter scroll bar didn’t respond to a finger touch or the pen.

    • Dragging pages within the page sorter with a finger or pen wasn’t working.

  • Fixed the issue where objects with an infinite cloner applied would not be locked on the page and could be accidentally deleted or moved.

  • Fixed the issue that caused Notebook files containing GIFs resulted in a corrupted PDF or PPTX file after being exported.

  • Fixed an issue that would cause digital ink to appear offset from the pen if users were drawing or writing on a Notebook page that was extended.

  • Fixed an issue that prevented users from copying text in Notebook and pasting it into Google Classroom.

  • Fixed an issue that sometimes caused cells in a table to not be editable.

Mac

  • Fixed the issue where copying an inverted music half note would cause Notebook to stop responding.

  • Improved Equation Editor: The dialog has a new tab that contains common geometry expressions and symbols, such as line segments, arcs, angles, and more.

  • SMART Notebook’s new dual-page view accommodates the 16:9 aspect ratio and is optimized for 4K displays.

  • Exporting a Notebook file as a web page now exports lessons in a form that other programs can use more easily, especially assistive screen readers. Previous versions of SMART Notebook exported each page as an image. But now, lessons are exported as a single .html file, and the exported content matches the original types wherever possible.

  • Keyboard navigation has been improved, particularly within the Page Sorter and Properties side bars.

  • Exporting to PDF and PowerPoint have been improved to match the original lesson content more closely.

  • The Protractor tool is more intuitive: it features a standard resize handle, improved rotation handles, and a keypad for entering exact numbers.

  • The Ruler tool can now be rotated from every corner and made shorter or longer from either end.

  • SMART Notebook software no longer stops responding when selecting the Text tool after applying animation effects to an object.

  • Resolved an issue in which grouping Smart Blocks could cause an error message.

  • A custom background image applied to a single page is no longer overridden by the theme’s background image.

  • The behavior of tables has been improved: before, it was too easy to select and resize a border by mistake while trying to select the contents of a cell.

  • Opening a .notebook file created in iQ no longer causes an error when a page containing an activity is opened in Notebook on a computer.

  • Locked items can no longer be deleted.

  • Resolved an issue in which an image’s mask could not be removed.

  • Resolved an error message that could occur after moving an object that included an active animation.

  • Changes to text size made with a text object’s resize handle are now saved correctly.

  • Resizing is now consistent with other objects: select the tool and adjust using the blue resize handle in the bottom-right of the selection frame.

  • Resolved shape layering issue in which divided shapes were inserted behind images upon creation.

Note 

Although most of Notebook’s features have been included in the latest release, some features have been deprecated, and others are coming soon. Learn more.

  • Creating fixed-proportion shapes such as squares and rectangular polygons is more intuitive in SMART Notebook 23 for Windows. If you record a lesson using the Lesson Recorder and you create these shapes, when you playback the recording in SMART Notebook 23 for Mac or in SMART Notebook 22, you may notice some discrepancies.

  • When recording lessons with the Lesson Recorder, rotating a measurement tool, and protractor arc actions will not be recorded.

  • When inserting the SMART Document Camera viewer, the window appears too large for the lesson page and cannot be resized.

  • Adding a background image or color fill to tables does not work.

  • When creating a new theme with a high-resolution image as the background, the image appears to be blurry.

  • When using the Recognize as Shape feature on an object, you may not be able to minimize the resulting shape.

  • Cannot add text to a table cell. As a workaround, create a separate text object and move it into the cell of the table.

  • Although most of Notebook’s features have been included in the latest release, some features have been deprecated, and others are coming soon. Learn more.

  • Creating fixed-proportion shapes such as squares and rectangular polygons is more intuitive in SMART Notebook 23 for Windows. If you record a lesson using the Lesson Recorder and you create these shapes, when you playback the recording in SMART Notebook 23 for Mac or in SMART Notebook 22, you may notice some discrepancies.

  • When recording lessons with the Lesson Recorder, inserting a table, rotating a measurement tool, and protractor arc actions will not be recorded. You may also notice during playback of the recording that the text annotations you added appear out of order.

  • In some cases, interactive features such as activities, SMART Blocks, and equation editing may become unresponsive after a computer wakes from sleep if SMART Notebook was running at the time of sleep. As a workaround, close then re-open the file.
