Connecting to a computer or display

There are a number of ways to connect your SMART Document Camera to a display device, such as a computer or SMART Board interactive display:

Method

Description

USB Out

Use this method if you will be using the document camera with a computer or a SMART Board interactive display with iQ.

Note 

This method is required if you plan to use the document camera with SMART Notebook software.

HDMI Out

Use this method to connect directly to a display that has an HDMI port, such as a SMART Board interactive display.

Wireless

Use this method to connect to a Wi-Fi-enabled device, such as a computer or SMART Board interactive display, from anywhere in the classroom. There are three wireless connection methods:

  • Peer-to-Peer (P2P) (recommended)

  • Wi-Fi

  • Miracast

Read the sections below for the connection method you want to use.

Important 

Before completing these procedures, make sure you install the required software.

Use the included USB cable to connect the document camera to a computer or display.

To connect your document camera to a computer with a USB cable

  1. Use the included USB cable to connect the USB B port on the document camera to a USB port on the computer or a display.

    Tip 

    If you need to extend the USB connection, see Troubleshooting and extending USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 connection.

  2. Press WiFi on the control panel until the Wi-Fi indicator light is off.

  3. Open the SMART Document camera software or SMART Notebook software, depending on which application you want to use to display the document camera’s live images.

Use the HDMI Out port to connect the document camera to a display. Using this method only displays the document camera’s live image on the connected display device. Use the remote control or control panel to change the picture (for example, zoom in, focus, freeze, and so on). If you want to record video or save captures of the live image, first attach a USB drive to the document camera.

To connect your document camera to a display device

  1. Connect the HDMI cable to the HDMI OUT port on the document camera’s rear connection panel.

  2. Locate the HDMI IN port on the display device and connect the HDMI cable.

  3. Press the Camera/PC button on the control panel or remote control to switch the video signal to the display device.

You can use the included Wi-Fi dongle to create a direct Peer-to-Peer (P2P) wireless connection between the document camera and your computer. This direct connection enables you to quickly connect the document camera without having to enter a password to connect school’s network.

This is the easiest and recommended way to connect wirelessly.

Notes 

  • If you connect using P2P, the document camera’s built-in mic cannot be used to record sound. Instead, you must use the mic on the device you are connecting to for recording sound.

  • SMART Notebook software cannot be used with this connection method. To use the document camera with SMART Notebook, use a USB connection.

  • P2P is not available for connecting to the SMART Document Camera 650 android app or SMART Board interactive displays with iQ.

To connect using P2P (not available for android app)

  1. Download and install the SMART Document Camera software.

    Important 

    For macOS, this download includes a driver for the Wi-Fi dongle that must be installed separately on the computer. See SMART Document Camera software for macOS.

  2. Connect the included Wi-Fi dongle to a USB port on your computer.

  3. Open the SMART Document Camera software.

    You will see your document camera listed.

    Tip 

    You can find the MAC address by pressing Info on the control panel or remote control and browsing to Info > System > Information.

  4. Click Connect.

  5. Click Next.

  6. (Optional) Enter a name and password for the document camera. A name helps you identify the document camera more easily, while the password will prevent unwanted users from connecting to your document camera wirelessly. If no name is entered, a default name is used.

    Tip 

    You can change the name and password later by selecting the Info button for the document camera. See Using the document camera software to view live images.

  7. Click Done.

    The connection should be complete in about 60 seconds. When connection is successful, the camera’s live image appears in the SMART Document Camera software.

The document camera has its own Wi-Fi which you can connect to directly from your device.

To connect your document camera to a wireless network

  1. Download and install the SMART Document Camera software.

  2. Press WiFi on the control panel.

    The Wi-Fi indicator light turns blue.

  3. Open the SMART Document Camera software.

    The software automatically detects available document cameras.

  4. Click Connect for the document camera you want to connect with.

    A message appears asking if you want to set up Wi-Fi mode.

  5. Click Yes.

    You are prompted to select a Wi-Fi network to connect with.

  6. Select the network you want to use and enter its password.

  7. Click Connect.

  8. (Optional) Enter a name and password for the document camera. A name helps you identify the document camera more easily, while the password will prevent unwanted users from connecting to your document camera wirelessly. If no name is entered, a default name is used.

    Tip 

    You can change the name and password later by selecting the Info button for the document camera. See Using the document camera software to view live images.

  9. Click Done.

  10. After the document camera is connected, click Start Streaming.

    The camera’s live image appears in the SMART Document Camera software.

If your computer or device you want to connect to supports Miracast, you can also set that up to quickly display images captured by the document camera to the device.

To connect your document camera to Miracast

  1. Press Info on the control panel or remote control.

    The on-screen (OSD) menu appears on your display.

  2. Use the right arrow button on the remote control or the increase brightness button on the control panel to browse to the Wireless tab.

    Note 

    If the Wireless tab is disabled, the Wi-Fi mode is turned off. To turn it on, press the Wi-Fi button and wait for the indicator light on the document camera to turn blue.

  3. Browse to Mode and then press Select.

  4. Select Miracast and then press Select.

    The Miracast setup option is now available.

  5. Use the down arrow button on the remote control or the Zoom Out button on the control panel to browse to Miracast Setup and then press Select.

  6. Select your remote display from the list.

    The camera’s image appears on the remote display’s screen after connecting.
